Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a client-centered healthcare profession focused on enabling individuals to participate independently and meaningfully in their daily activities, also known as occupations. These occupations include self-care tasks such as dressing, bathing, and feeding; productivity-related activities like work, school, or household responsibilities; and leisure or recreational pursuits that contribute to overall well-being and quality of life.
Occupational therapists work with people of all ages who face physical, developmental, sensory, cognitive, or emotional challenges due to injury, illness, disability, or aging. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to improve functional independence by enhancing a person’s ability to perform everyday tasks safely and effectively. Therapy plans are individualized, taking into account the patient’s goals, environment, and specific limitations.
Interventions in occupational therapy may include therapeutic exercises to improve strength, coordination, balance, and fine motor skills; training in adaptive techniques to simplify daily activities; and the use of assistive devices or adaptive equipment. Occupational therapists also modify home, school, or workplace environments to reduce barriers and promote accessibility, thereby supporting long-term independence.
In pediatric care, occupational therapy helps children with developmental delays, sensory processing issues, or learning difficulties to achieve age-appropriate milestones and succeed in school and social settings. In adult and geriatric populations, OT supports recovery after injuries, strokes, or surgeries, and assists individuals with chronic conditions or age-related limitations in maintaining autonomy and dignity.
Beyond physical rehabilitation, occupational therapy addresses cognitive and psychosocial aspects of health. Therapists may help individuals improve attention, memory, problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, and coping strategies. By focusing on holistic, practical, and meaningful outcomes, occupational therapy plays a vital role in enhancing functional ability, confidence, and overall quality of life.
